A.M.A and other Key Groups
Backing away from ObamaCare™Last weekend, fresh off his trip to the Middle East, President Obama fired-up his campaign minions to hit the streets and
push his and Speaker Pelosi’s government-run health care plan. In fact, yesterday on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show,” Speaker Pelosi pledged that
“A bill will not come out of the House without a public [government-run] option.” She also opined that
“everything is on the table”, including rising taxes and taxing health care benefits.
Today the
American Medical Association (A.M.A.) has let Congress know that it will not endorse and
strongly opposes the creation of a government-sponsored insurance plan.
The announcement comes just four days before the President is scheduled to speak at the A.M.A’s annual meeting.
The creation of a government-sponsored insurance plan, seen as an
essential part of the reform by Obama and Democrat leadership, is not just a thorny issue causing problems and alarm for the A.M.A but for other key groups as well.
ON THE PROPOSED GOVERNMENT-RUN PLAN:• “The creation of a government public plan option would inevitably result in a government-run health care system.” - U.S. Chamber of Commerce
• “A public plan…cannot operate on a level playing field and compete fairly if it acts as both a payer and a regulator.” - National Coalition on Benefits
• “We also have great concerns over an intrusive government-run program that doesn’t compete fairly with the private market. We believe the private market can meet the challenge and can be held accountable to provide solutions that lead to lower costs and greater competition.” - National Federation of Independent Business
ON THE BENEFITS OF PRIVATE INSURANCE:• “One of the many strengths of our voluntary employer-based system is that group purchasing lowers health care costs because employers, especially larger employers, are able to effectively pool the risks of employees.”- American Benefits Council
